Recycling old materials is the perfect way of creating
something unique, an item of clothing that is yours to wear whenever you want
an never having the fear of someone else wearing the same. That’s what I love
about making your own clothing its unique not only that but also buying clothes
in charity shop and vintage shops, the chances of someone wearing the same
outfit as you is like 1%. Plus by buying from charity shops you’re doing your
bit in helping.
When I first started sewing I would cut up old clothes and
try to make something new, it didn’t always go to plan as I had like no sewing
experience but with a lot of excitement and enthusiasm I stuck at it. Over the
years I have gained useful tips within sewing an grew more confident so when it
come to a re-fashioned project I wanted to go that on step farther than buying
charity shop clothes and cutting and sewing I wanted to make something
completely recycled and wearable using unconventional materials.
My chosen materials where these long clear plastic bags that
are used for keeping garments covered, there was many just hanging on a rail
waiting to be thrown out. That’s when I remembered an episode of Project Runway
had a designer using bin bags to make a garment. I wanted to test my skills and
just go for it, I had to make the materials useable to I have to melt them with
the iron to give it a bit of stiffness for me to then sew into. Some of the
bags I used had writing on them saying who’s garment it was so I decided to
leave it there it gave it an interesting look and was clear that these were
recycled.
