The first time I heard of Grayson Perry was in college, my
tutor put the radio on and it was him doing interviews and talking about his
art work. It was interesting to hear his views on what art is and what people
think art is. I must admit once I left the class I’d forgotten all about him, I
would hear a friend of mine talk to our tutor about him as she is a big fan but
I lost interest.
Being in London with the all my college friends and tutors
we went to many amazing exhibitions but one stood out for me the most which was
Grayson Perry’s ‘Who are you’ exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, like
I said I had forgotten all about him until my friend was desperate to go to his
exhibition so when we had our free time we went.
Wow I was overwhelmed by how much I loved it, his work was
amazing nothing like ive ever seen before. His main focus was ‘identity’
working with many different people he took there stories and turned them into
art, each individual had a unique heart-warming story that made you think twice
about your own life and what you’re doing with it. Well that’s how it made me
feel.
After seeing his work up close I began to remember those
interviews I heard, everything my tutor says about him i am a true fan now. I
bought one of his books called ‘Playing to the Gallery’ it truly is one of the
best books ive read, he has this way of explaining things in such a clear way
its mesmerising. He recently had a documentary about his journey to making this
strange and awesome house, his inspiration was a story he made up, it was just
so fascinating. It was showing on channel 4 and its called ‘Grayson Perry’s A
House For Essex’ I would highly recommend watching this.
Here are some of my favourite works from the exhibition.
Thank you for reading.
